Colin Todd
Violin and Viola instruction
Colin Todd teaches violin and viola to students of all ages and abilities. His teaching style is based upon the Russian method, which emphasizes the physicality of playing a string instrument as well as a strong technical foundation, thus enabling the student to develop the feeling of the instrument as an extension of his or her body. In addition to this, Colin believes strongly in a well-rounded musical education including music theory and history to assist the student in becoming a complete musician.
Colin is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Music where he received a BA/BM in music performance, studying with Helen Callus and Kelly Ferris. He has performed in master classes with Melia Watras, Paul Coletti, Mara Gearman, Peter Slowik, the Leipzig-Gewandhaus Quartett, and the Vermeer Quartet. As well as a serious interest in the core classical repertoire, Colin has maintained an active interest in Baroque and contemporary music, performing regularly with both the UW Baroque ensemble and Contemporary Group.
Colin currently performs with Duo Girasole, a violin and viola duo playing in a wide variety of venues and events locally. His solo performances have included appearances with local orchestras such as the Bellevue Youth Orchestra and the Northwest Academy Chamber Orchestra. Colin regularly plays with the Federal Way Symphony, Yakima Symphony (as principal), Bellevue Philharmonic, and the Tacoma Symphony.
