Erika Kapin
Violin instruction
Erika Kapin provides violin instruction for beginning and advanced students of all ages. She teaches correct playing posture and technique so that students can be comfortable and are able to enjoy the music while playing. She emphasizes developing a musical sensitivity in conjunction with the correct technique.
Learning the music by ear and having fun right away is very important. After developing a solid foundation in proper technique and a good sense of musicality then she begins to teach the students music theory and music reading skills. She encourages students to explore any genre that interests them such as classical, bluegrass, or jazz.
For younger children, parents are encouraged to sit in on the lesson and be a part of the learning experience. Erika enjoys providing a fun, positive learning environment for all students of the violin.
Erika Kapin began studying the violin at the age of seven. She has studied with numerous teachers including Carolyn Wyman, Gennady Filimonov, and, on her exchange trip to Israel, with Israella Weisser. Currently, she is studying jazz violin with Michael White. She has received her Associates of the Arts and Sciences Degree from Bellevue Community College.
Erika has been a member of the Seattle Youth Symphony and many other small chamber groups. In 2002, Erika was the music director, co-composer and performer for the large-scale performance opera, Ode to Icarus, which was performed and recorded October 2002 in Seattle.
Currently, Erika is also working as a studio player for several local musicians in town including Derrick Heart, AJ Thompson and Gloria Banzat. Erika loves all sorts of music and has also played in an experimental rock band, and a band performing music from places around the world such as Persia, Spain and India.
